This is the webpage for Physics 24, Winter 2007, at:

http://online.kitp.ucsb.edu/phys24/
(http://www.kitp.ucsb.edu/~doug/phys24/      mirror site)

It will be updated steadily as the course goes on, so please visit it frequently.

I am Douglas Eardley, a professor of physics. My office is Room 2329 KITP (Kohn Hall), my email is  doug@kitp.ucsb.edu  (always mention "physics 24" in the Subject) and my campus phone is 893-2280. Office hours this week are 2:00 - 3:00 pm Mon Mar 19 and Fri Mar 23. If you would like to meet me at another time, email or call first to make an appointment. Or, I am always happy to answer questions by email.

Announcements:

Lectures are held MWF 1-1:50pm in Room 1640 Broida Hall. The first lecture is Monday, Jan 8, and the last lecture is Friday, Mar 16.

Discussion Section meets Fri 11-11:50pm in Room 1115 Girvetz.

Topics: Magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction and inductance, AC circuits, Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic waves, light and geometrical optics, interference and diffraction.

Prerequisites: Physics 3 or 23. Not open for credit to students who have completed Physics 4. Recommended preparation: Mathematics 5B (may be taken concurrently) and Physics 4L (may be taken concurrently).

Book: Physics by Halliday, Resnick and Krane, 5th Edition, Volume 2. (Wiley, ISBN 0-471-40194-3), available in the bookstore, or online. Physics 23 used the same book, so you probably already own a copy.
Note 1/26/07: Since the bookstore has run out of copies, I have temporarily posted online the first three chapters of our course: Chapter 32 and Chapter 33 and Chapter 34.

Laboratory sections: You must register separately for a Physics 4L lab section.

TA for the course is Miles Stoudenmire. His office hours are 12:30-2:00 Mon and 2:00-3:30 Tue in the Physics Study Room, Broida Room 1019.

Grading will be approximately like this: Homework 30%, first midterm exam 15%, second midterm exam 15%, final exam 40%. The Lab is graded separately as Physics 4L.

The first Midterm Exam took place Friday February 2, 1-1:50 pm in the classroom (1640 Broida). Class did well, average was 54.4/60 = 90.6%; solutions here. It was a closed book exam; you may use a sheet of formulas (see old sample sheet), and a calculator. Please bring a blue book (and pencils!). It covered:

The second Midterm Exam toke place Friday March 2, 1-1:50 pm in the classroom (1640 Broida). Ground rules were same as for first midterm: Closed book; you may use a sheet of formulas (see sample sheet), and a calculator. Please pencils and scratch paper (a blue book is not necessary). Coverage will be Chapters 36-38. Tests are now graded and were returned in lecture; class as a whole did well , average was 54.5/60 = 90.8%, solutions here.

The Final Exam will take place Thursday March 22, 4-7 pm in the classroom (1640 Broida). Closed book; you may use formula sheet with no more than 4 sides (see sample sheet). Bring a calculator; you do not need a blue book. The exam will cover the entire course:

Homework will be due Wednesdays by 4pm. Assignment 1 is due 5pm Wednesday Jan 17. Please turn it in at the Physics 24 Box, just outside Broida Room 1019 (left of the elevators in the Lobby).
