It will be updated steadily as the course goes on, so please visit it frequently.
Professor: Douglas Eardley. Office hours this week are 2:30-4pm Thursday Room 2329 KITP (Kohn Hall). If you want to meet me at another time, email or call first to make an appointment. My email address is doug@kitp.ucsb.edu (always put "Phys 4" in the Subject) and my campus phone is 893-2280.
Announcements: No Lecture Tuesday June 3. Last lecture will be Thursday June 5.
Lectures are held Tue Thu 12:30-1:45pm. in Room 1640 Broida Hall. The first lecture is Tuesday, Apr 1, and the last lecture is Thursday, Thurs Jun 5.
Prerequisites: Physics 3 or 23.
Recommended preparation: Mathematics 5B (may be taken concurrently) and Physics 4L (may be taken concurrently).
Topics: Magnetic fields, electromagnetic induction and inductance, AC circuits, Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic waves, light and geometrical optics, interference and diffraction.
Book: University Physics with Modern Physics with Mastering Physics, 11/E by Young and Freedman, available in the bookstore. Physics 1-3 used this same book, so you probably already own a copy.
The course TA is Phillip Popp <popp@umail.ucsb.edu>. Office hours are held in the Physics Study Room (1019 Broida) where TAs are ready to help you 8am-4:30pm weekdays. To see a particular TA consult the schedule of office hours.
Laboratory sections (Physics 4L): You must register separately for the lab section, as Physics 4L (two choices exist: Mon 4-6:50pm, Wed 1-3:50pm, all in Broida 2316). Buy the Physics 4 Lab Manual in the Bookstore. Bring your Lab Manual, calculator, etc.
Grading will be approximately like this: Homework (on web) 40%, first midterm exam 15%, second midterm exam 15%, final exam 30%. The Lab is graded separately as Physics 4L.
Homework will be due Fridays, and must be done online at
Mastering Physics (Course ID is
MPEARDLEY88967). The first assignment is for practice only; Assignment 2 (first assignment for
credit) is due Fri Apr 11, 10pm.
Registering for the online homework: Go to Mastering Physics for Young & Freedman 11e
and register for course Course ID MPEARDLEY88967 for Physics 4.
As your own ID, enter your perm number.
The book is the 11e edition, don't register for another edition. You must register again even if you
took Physics 3 in Winter.
For further help see CLAS. The particular tutor for Physics 4 is Peter Lindstrom <lindstrom.peter@gmail.com>. The classes are TR from 9-9:50 and TR from 4-4:50.
The first midterm took place in Lecture Thu Apr 24. The test was closed book; you could use a calculator and a single sheet of equations or notes (both sides). The test covered Chapters 27, 28, 29. It was multiple-choice; you didn't need a scantron, but did need pencils and a calculator. The test is now graded, and the class as a whole did well; the average was 58/75 (or 77%). Tests will be returned in Lecture. You can see your score here.
The second midterm took place in Lecture Thursday May 15, covering Chapters 30, 31, 32. The test was closed book; you could use a calculator and a single sheet of equations or notes (both sides). It was multiple-choice; you didn't need a scantron, but did need pencils and a calculator. The test is now graded, and the class as a whole did well; the average was 63/75 (or 84%). Tests will be returned in Lecture. You can see your score here.
The final exam took place in the Lecture room Mon Jun 9, 12-3pm. It covered the entire course Phys 4. The test is closed book; you can use a calculator and two sheet of equations or notes (four sides). It is multiple-choice, similar to the midterms; you don't need a scantron, but do need pencils and a calculator. The test is now graded, and the class as a hole did well; the average was 113/150 (or 75%). You can see your score here.
